Trash Talk: Oily Skin Beauty Empties Q1 2025

The first quarter of the year is about over, and I feel I’ve used up a few more products than normal. I’m not sure why since I tend to use up products pretty slowly. I think it’s a combination of not slathering on a lot of my beauty products to make them last longer and that I buy large bottles.

For Trash Talk, I share all the beauty products I used up during a specific time frame. I share my thoughts on them and include whether or not I would ever repurchase them.

Thayer’s 2% AHA Toner

I love Thayer’s toners and have used several of them. I saw that this AHA toner has glycolic and lactic acids, which interested me. It claims to have pores looking more refined within one week.

I thought it might irritate my slightly sensitive skin, but it didn’t. It felt as soothing as any of the other Thayer’s toners I previously used and am currently using.

Verdict
Not repurchasing. I liked it and thought my pores looked a bit better, but it wasn’t a drastic enough change for me.

Where to purchase
If you’d like to give it a try for yourself, you can find it at Target, Amazon, CVS, and Ulta.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

I started using Cetaphil facial cleansers several years ago. I started with the Gentle one but prefer the Facial one as it works better for my oily skin. I typically use this cleanser at night but will sometimes use it during the day.

Verdict
Repurchasing. This is my go-to facial cleanser, especially when I’m washing makeup off my face. It does a good job and doesn’t try out my oily skin.

Where to purchase
This Cetaphil cleanser can be found at Walmart, Target, Amazon, Ulta, and CVS.

Hero Mighty Patch The Original

I bought these on a trip when I had a few stubborn pimples pop up. I had seen several good reviews of this and how it absorbed the gunk in the pimple within six to eight hours. You know it’s working when the clear patch turns white.

Verdict
Repurchasing. It doesn’t work for every pimple, but it has worked for most. Sometimes, it takes me using the patch on a pimple for two nights before I start seeing the pimple shrink. Other times, the pimple will have shrunk overnight.

Where to purchase
If you’d like to give it a try for yourself, you can find it at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Ulta.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

I started using this facial serum to help with reducing the look of my pores and oil production on my skin. Zinc helps with balancing excess sebum production, which impacts the oil the skin produces. Niacinamide helps improve the look of the skin.

Verdict
Not repurchasing. I started using the niacinamide serum for another brand that I like a little bit better than this one. The consistency of The Ordinary Niacinamide serum is more watery than the other one but not as hydrating for my skin.

Where to purchase
I’ve seen this serum for purchase at Target, Ulta, Amazon, and Sephora.

NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray

I’ve been looking for drugstore makeup products that I could have in rotation to help save money and not be completely reliant on higher-end makeup products. One product I found is this sheer, lightweight NYX setting spray for makeup that provides a matte finish. I use it whenever I wear foundation of any kind to lock it and the rest of my makeup into place.

Verdict
Repurchase. I’ve been trying another drugstore brand matte setting spray, and I don’t think it’s as good as the one from NYX. I like how it gives my skin a matte look that lasts for hours without me feeling like there is a mask on my skin. Also, it does a good job of keeping my makeup looking good and in place throughout the day.

Where to purchase
This can be found at Ulta, Walmart, Target, and CVS.

Neutrogena Hydroboost Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer with SPF 50

Even with oily skin, a good facial moisturizer is important. SPF is also important no matter what skin type you have. This Neutrogana moisturizer provides both. It’s hydrating because of the hyaluronic acid and glycerin it contains. It’s also fragrance-free, which is great for those with sensitive skin.

Verdict
Repurchase. This is my go-to daytime moisturizer. It’s lightweight enough for use in the summer and thick enough to keep my skin hydrated in the winter. It doesn’t irritate my skin, and it has SPF in it, so I get a moisturizer and SPF in one and don’t have to buy or use two different products.

Where to purchase
I typically buy this from Target or Ulta, but it can also be found at Walmart, CVS, from Neutrogena, and on Amazon.

Equate Beauty Skin Cream

This is the Walmart brand version of Nozema. It’s a skin cream cleanser that has eucalyptus oil in it. I had been using this as a makeup remover for my skin. I’d buy this because it was a little cheaper than Noxzema but worked just as well.

Verdict
Not repurchase. I still like this product, but I changed my skincare routine, so I don’t need it anymore. To remove my makeup, I use a wet washcloth. Then. I follow up with facial cleanser and sometimes double cleanse depending on how much makeup I put on.

Where to purchase
Since this is a Walmart brand product, you can only get it at Walmart.

Good Molecules

When it comes to my skincare, I don’t like to change it too much. My skin is slightly sensitive, so I don’t like to be too adventurous and potentially irritate my skin. I saw this niacinamide serum, and after some hesitation, I gave it a try. It looked pretty similar to The Ordinary’s niacinamide serum, and the prices were pretty much the same.

Verdict
I like this niacinamide serum more than The Ordinary one I’d been using. Compared to The Ordinary one, it’s a little bit thicker it does a better job of hydrating my skin. Though it doesn’t have zinc, I haven’t noticed a change in how oily my skin gets.

Where to purchase
I’ve seen this serum for sale at Target and Ulta.
