4 Of The Best Hair Brand Alternatives To Mielle

While it has died down some, the Mielle controversy is still going strong. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, let’s recap.

Back in 2024, several women took to social media to share that Mielle hair products, specifically products from the Rosemary Mint line were causing their hair to fall out and thin. Other women chimed in and said they were experiencing the same or seeing negative changes in their hair after using Mielle hair products.

It was speculated that product formulas had changed due to Mielle’s partnership with Procter and Gamble. You can read more in my post Should We Stop Using Mielle Hair Products?

So where does everything stand now with Mielle and where do we go from here?

Since those first claims, some more information or tea has come out

  • Mielle has said their product formulas haven’t changed. They have doubled and tripled down on this.
  • Mielle was posting content about hair shedding and what normal hair shedding looks like.
  • The Mielle CEO made a video saying that the initial start of this controversy was from an influencer to a competitor who paid a commission. Um…it seems like she’s claiming, without showing any evidence that someone was paid to spread misinformation about Mielle products.
  • In November a class action lawsuit was filed against Mielle that says “The Product contains ingredients that cause and have caused hair loss in its users, including Plaintiff and those in the Proposed Class Members.” and “Defendants misrepresent that the Product are safe; Defendants have failed to disclose that the Product may cause hair loss in its users.” Interestingly enough the lawsuit was filed the day before the Mielle CEO posted the video I mentioned above (hmmm….). You can view the whole lawsuit here

Wow! It will be interesting to see where this lawsuit goes. In the meantime, I’ve heard several people are scared to use Mielle products and have thrown their products away or are putting them in the back of the cabinet to see where everything nets out.

If you’re one of them you may be looking for some new hair brands to replace Mielle. If I was one of them here are the hair brands I would consider.

TGIN

This is one of my favorite brands which is evident because I use a couple of the shampoos, one of the deep conditioners, and a couple of the moisturizers.

TGIN which stands for Thank God It’s Natural has a mission of “redefine beauty by cultivating a community that empowers women to be the best versions of themselves.”

There are three product lines, called collections by TGIN, to choose from. Each collection includes a shampoo, a co-wash, a rinse-out conditioner, a deep conditioner, hair moisturizers, and some styling products. So each one has enough products for you to build your whole relaxed hair regimen around.

The collections are

  • The Moist Collection is the original collection, where TGIN all started. It’s all about restoring moisture in the hair and can be used by all hair types.
  • The Miracle RepaiRx Collection is formulated to revive, restore, and rejuvenate hair by strengthening and rebuilding it. This collection is perfect for high-porosity hair.
  • The Curls ‘N Roses Collection provides a lighter amount of moisture to the hair making it perfect for fine and low-porosity hair

You can see more about TGIN products and the ones that I use in these posts

I like that I can find this brand in-store and online across multiple retailers such as Amazon, TargetWalmartUlta, and Sally Beauty.

Eden BodyWorks

This is one of the black hair brands that I started using when I first started my relaxed hair journey in 2014. I used and tried several of the brand's products.

The mission of Eden BodyWorks is to “offer quality products that treat and maintain the hair and body’s original design.”

In 2024, Eden BodyWorks decided to trim down and remove several product lines. One of the lines that was cut was one I really liked. Oh well. The product lines that remain are

  • Lavender Aloe which seems to be about strengthening the hair
  • Coconut Shea which seems to be about intense hydration and moisture
  • Peppermint Tea which seems to be more about scalp health

I’ve used at least one product from the first two lines. You can read my reviews of them in Review Of Eden BodyWorks Lavender Aloe Anti-Breakage Deep Conditioner, Product Review: Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave-In Conditioner, and Product Review: Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea CoWash.

One downside of Eden BodyWorks is that it has become less accessible in retail locations. It can be found online on Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Sally Beauty.

The Mane Choice

This is another black hair brand I tried early on in my relaxed hair journey. None of the products ever received a long-term placement in my relaxed hair regimen but I still think it’s a good alternative to Mielle if you’re looking for one. Here's a review I did on The Mane Choice Detangling Hydration Shampoo.

The mission of The Mane Choice is to “serve the vast needs of the multicultural consumer and their diverse curl patterns by developing effective formulas with amazing scents infused with vitamins and essential nutrients such as biotin, vitamins A, B, C, & E, for healthy hair and retention.”

This hair brand has a lot of lines or collections as they call them

  • Oils of Africa “features intoxicating, multi-tasking essential oil blends in carrier oils endemic to various countries across Africa, for scalp and body”
  • H2Oh! which is “inspired by the diversity of marine life, this collection is formulated to improve the appearance of healthy hair and scalp”
  • The Alpha is the original collection for this brand. The entire collection is “infused with Biotin, Vitamin A, B, C, D, E and more, to help nourish and maintain hair”
  • Tropical Moringa is “formulated with a moisturizing blend infused with essential vitamins and Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil. The formula deeply penetrates the hair shaft to infuse it with vital moisture and nutrients.”
  • Manetabolism “helps lead to healthier-looking, rejuvenated hair.” The products in this collection are supposed to be hydrating and infused with Antioxidants
  • Ancient Egyptian is “inspired by the formulas of ancient Egypt, this collection is filled with some of the most rare and robust natural oils such as Kalahari Oil, infused in our products to help strengthen, repair, and add remarkable shine”

  • Heavenly Halo “instantly drenches moisture-depleted hair with the most intense hydration”
  • Exotic Cool-Laid is “infused with natural fruit extracts to help nourish the hair and scalp with nutrients and natural water.” It claims to help create “shinier, stronger looking hair & scalp”
  • Peach Black Tea is “formulated for fine to medium hair, and to provide protection from environmental damage.” It’s also said to provide intense volume for the hair
  • Hair Type 4 Leaf Clover is specifically for helping to soften and increase the manageability of type 4 hair. It’s “a moisture-rich solution designed to help eliminate dryness and minimize breakage that can be associated with highly-textured hair”

  • Pink Lemonade is “formulated to define and shape your curls. It’s the perfect balance of clarification, hydration and moisture to give your hair the ability to showcase its most optimal texture.”
  • Prickly Pear is a conditioner only collection that is “infused with superfoods that condition and indulge your hair with conditioning fatty acids that have a hydrating effect on your hair”
  • Proceed With Caution is “formulated to maintain pH” and “helps to balance oil production on the scalp, hydrates strands, and seals cuticle to lock in more moisture and shine”
  • Fruit Medley Kids has a conditioner, and moisturizer “for the little ones, essential to the perfect healthy looking hair regimen”

Whew! That's a lot of options to choose from.

The Mane Choice products seem to have limited in-store distribution but can be found on Amazon, at Sally Beauty, and at CVS.

Alikay Naturals

This is one brand I’ve had my eye on but haven’t acted on. Alikay Natural’s mission is “Being a leader in providing quality products and services that promotes education and healthy beauty practices, raising awareness of natural ingredients and supporting underserved communities.”

Alikay doesn’t seem to group its hair products by traditional type collections where all the products are formulated with specific ingredients to work together to solve a specific hair issue or for a specific hair type. At least not that I could easily find on its website. Some of the more popular products I see talked about and shared on social media are

  • Essential 17™ Hair Growth Oil is a lightweight blend of 17 oils that are supposed to help promote faster hair growth
  • Avocado Cream Moisture Repairing Hair Mask has vitamins and essential fats that help with replenishing strength, moisture, and shine to the hair
  • Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo is a clarifying shampoo that deep cleans the hair but doesn’t strip the hair of moisture

Alikay Naturals is another brand that I don’t see a lot in the stores but can find online at Walmart and Target.

Soultanicals

I honestly don’t know much about this brand though I’ve seen others talk about it. The first time I poked around the Soultanicals website was for this blog post.

“Soultanicals is an earthy, self-love collection of hand-crafted, soul-infused, melanin-inspired, body/hair love products made with a unique blend of organic, plant-based, herbal, and African botanical ingredients.”

I’m not sure what the top or most popular Soultanicals products are but these are a couple that stood out to me

  • Shea-Yurvedic Butta Shampoo claims to soften, stimulate, cleanse without stripping, strengthen, and nourish the hair.
  • Chebe-Ginger Deep Conditioner is a “pH balanced deep conditioner cleanses the scalp, moisturizes and nourishes the hair follicles to grow long. Loaded with scalp stimulants, this goodie will improve scalp circulation, reduce scalp inflammation and overall aid in supreme healthy hair growth!”

Distribution for this brand seems to be limited to the Soultanicals website and some select retail locations in certain states.

Which one of these hair brands would you try out or switch to?
