When looking for a matte foundation I wanted one that would help control oil, reduce the shine in my t-zone, and stay in place all day without feeling heavy on my skin.

During my search, I’ve tried a few different matte foundations. Some are on the affordable drugstore end, and some are on the high end. These are the six that rose to the top.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte And Poreless Liquid Foundation
This was my go-to drugstore matte foundation for years. I wore the shade Deep Golden which is one of 40 shades. This Maybelline foundation is formulated specifically for normal to oily skin. It contains “flexible micro-powders to control shine and blur pores throughout the day.”
It never felt heavy on my skin. I’d sometimes forget that I was wearing it. It’s a medium-coverage foundation that I could build up as needed. The finish always looked natural so I never felt like I was wearing makeup.

NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop 24HR Full Coverage Matte Foundation
If you like a full coverage foundation this could be the one. Like the L’Oreal foundation, it also claims to provide 24 hours of wear time.I’ve looked at trying this foundation but will say selecting from the 37 shades is a little daunting. What interested me in it is that it claims to be long-wear, waterproof, transfer-proof, and humidity-proof. This foundation also comes with 24 hr wear, an ultra-matte finish, high pigmentation, and shine control.

L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Longwear Foundation
I haven’t tried this foundation yet but I’ve heard several good things about it. Mostly because it claims to provide 24 hours of wear and can withstand heat, humidity, and sweat. The coverage is medium and can be built upon. It provides a soft-matte finish that controls oil without looking dry or powdery.
This L’Oreal foundation comes in up to 28 shades broken out among dark, neutral, and warm undertones. Some retailers may offer fewer than the 28 shades. In today’s world, 28 shades isn’t great but it’s not terrible. I will warn that the number of darker shades is lacking. There is only at least one in each undertone.
One thing I did want to note is that this foundation seems to be harder and harder to find so I’m not sure if L’Oreal is discontinuing it or not.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation
This is a popular foundation among oily-skinned women. Mostly because of the impressive 24-hour wear and it provides a flawless, natural matte finish. This foundation claims to help control oil throughout the day and resists sweat, heat, humidity, and even water. While I haven’t tried this foundation, it’s definitely on my give-it-a-try list. I like that it’s medium coverage that can easily be built up to full coverage. Plus it comes in 55 shades. Yes, you read right - 55 shades. Hopefully finding the right shade match won’t be that hard so finding the right match should be a breeze.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H Long Wear Matte Foundation
I don’t have much experience with the Lancôme brand as I haven’t used any products, much less this foundation. Despite that, I wanted to include it on the list as I’ve seen some influencers with oily skin talking about how well it wears on their skin. This claims to be “a full coverage, natural matte foundation with sweat and water-proof longwear.” Ingredients include hyaluronic acid and in some of the shades Ultra Marine Blue pigments or Chromium Oxide Green pigments “for richer deep and true-toned olive foundation shades.”
There are 55 shades to choose from. I like that the shade range covers various undertones - peach, red, pink, yellow, and golden.

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Liquid Foundation
This is one of the foundations I use now regularly. It is probably the godmother of wide foundation shade ranges as it has 40+ shades.Despite the wide shade range, I feel like this foundation tends to run a bit orange so it can be hard to find just the right shade. It took me a while to find one that I was happy with.
This Fenty foundation has a soft-matte finish with buildable medium coverage that never feels heavy on my skin. It’s formulated to be resistant to sweat and humidity. I think it stands up to those both decently especially when a setting spray is used.
