How To Save Money Shopping On Black Friday

The end of the year can be a great time to shop for gifts, stock up, or treat yourself. So many stores and brands have products on sale so they can clear out stock to make room for next year’s merchandise.

I have been able to find and take advantage of some really good deals on clothing, hair, and beauty items. But when I use one or more of these holiday savings tips I’ll be sharing I’m able to save even more.

1. Plan what you want to buy

Basically one of the best ways to save money is to have a game plan. When you know what you want to buy you can look for the best sales and try to find a store or stores with the most of the best deals. And you’ll be ready if a store or brand starts their deals early or has a pre-sale.

Besides going to different websites you can find bloggers and content creators that share holiday sale roundups and bookmark them for easy reference. I have a couple that I do each year - one for hair and beauty sales, the other for bloggers. I update my roundups on a regular basis with new sales that I see and get alerted about.

Doing this will help you set a budget that you’re comfortable with so you don’t overspend.

2. Use an online shopping assistant

I’m not sure if this is what they are called but what I’m calling them. These are sites like Honey, Rakuten, and Bing Rebates where you can sign up and get cash back on your online purchases at major retailers.

Not only can you get cash back but if you have the browser extension some of them provide other features like
  • an alert if another site has a better price
  • notices on available coupons for that site

3. Comparison shop

I hinted at this earlier and online shopping assistants can help with this but it’s always good to compare prices with different stores and sites. Many of the same items will be on sale but not all of the sales will be the same. Sometimes taking a few extra minutes to do some research on prices could save you more in the long run.

For me the two best ways to comparison shop are to use one of the shopping assistants I mentioned previously or look at store circulars.

4. Sign up for alerts

If there are certain brands or stores you want to purchase from, connect with them by following their social media accounts, and signing up for text and/or email alerts.

I’ve found out about some great sales by doing this. Some I’ve taken advantage of myself and sales I’ve shared with others.

5. Price match

This is a little-known secret that several stores will match the in-store and even online prices of their competitors. You can see what a store's price match policy is by going to their site or asking a manager at the store.

6. Use coupon or rebate apps

Depending on what you're shopping for you can use apps like RakutenHoney App, and Ibotta to earn cash back on your online purchases and even some of your in-store purchases with large retailers.

One thing I’d recommend is to see which of the apps is offering the better deal on cash back as it can be anywhere from 1 to 10%.

Some coupon apps like Ibotta have cash back coupons for specific items like toys at certain stores.

Additionally, there are apps where you can scan your receipt to earn points which can be redeemed for gift cards or cash back. My two favorite apps like this are Fetch and Reciept Hog.
