One of the brands that ended up in that next is Not Your Mother’s. I’d never tried anything from Not Your Mother’s before but had heard about them and watched some video reviews for some of their products. I had also seen that their products were very affordable.

Not Your Mother’s seems to have separated their products into two types - original and naturals. The naturals products looked more appealing to me so I started looking at the descriptions and ingredient lists for all of the butter masques. The one that stood out to me was the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque.
This hair mask claims that it “deeply conditions and aids in restoring damaged strands, preparing hair for a purified, fresh style.”
Besides that claim, there were a few things that drew me to it. The first one was the ingredients. There’s no protein. I’m trying to use more hair products that have no protein ingredients and it’s hard to find conditioners that don’t include any protein ingredients.
Secondly, the hair mask talked about deep conditioning and helping to restore hair damage. All of that is appealing to me because while I no longer have protein overload my hair is still recovering from it. Additionally, the hair mask has no sulfates, silicones, parabens, gluten, or dyes.
The third thing was the price. It’s pretty affordable. Plus, I could get a sample-sized pack for a couple of dollars before committing and buying the full-size container.
After settling on the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque I went to Ulta and picked it up. I ended up not using it right away. I wanted to wait to use it until after my relaxer touch up and that was a few weeks away. So a few weeks later, the week after my touch-up I pulled this hair mask out to give it a try.
When I tried out the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque for the first time I used it as part of my normal wash day. The reason, I wanted to see how it would interact with my staple products and hair regimen.
After shampooing I applied it to my wet hair. The consistency of this hair mask is very thick. So thick I was able to put some on my hand, and hold my hand upside down and no product came off. My hair loves thick hair masks so the product sunk right in.
The instructions said to leave it on for 5-10 minutes. It didn’t say anything about covering your head or using heat. I followed the instructions and left it on for 6 minutes. I wasn’t sure how my hair would feel afterward since I typically leave my hair masks on much longer, a minimum of 30 minutes, and I use heat to get better penetration.
Well, my concern was for naught. When I rinsed the hair mask out my hair felt like butter! Oh...my...goodness! My hair felt so soft and hydrated. Plus, I found that I didn’t need to moisturize and seal my hair as often during the week.
So while my hair felt really good after using the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque I did kick myself for not leaving it on longer and using heat. My hair would have felt even better.
I only used about half of the packet and had enough left for a second wash day. For my second use, I followed the same routine but left the hair mask on longer about 35-40 minutes (I lost track of time), and wore my deep conditioning cap to provide some heat.
After I took off the cap and before I stepped into the shower to rinse it out I ran my fingers through my hair. Let me tell you. My hair felt so soft and hydrated that I did a little happy dance. And my hair felt just as good after rinsing the hair mask out.
Overall the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque is a really good conditioner. It really hydrates my hair even if I leave it on for 5-10 minutes without heat or 30-40 minutes with heat. It also keeps my hair hydrated through the drying process so I don’t feel a need to use a lot of product on my hair during wash day or in the days that follow.

As of the writing of this post, I haven’t decided if the Not Your Mother’s Naturals Matcha Green Tea & Wild Apple Blossom Butter Masque will be a staple hair mask of mine but it’s definitely in the running. I have a few more hair masks that I want to try and then compare to this one. But this is one that I would recommend and can see myself using again.
